Ragnar Kjartansson’s FOLKSONG!

Ragnar Kjartansson will be performing ‘FOLKSONG,’ a 10-day long ‘continuous’ (11:00 am to 5:00pm daily 10/11-10/20) musical composition at 508 West 25th Street. Imagine sort of an ethereal-rock guitar piece, with accompanying partly incoherent yet very melodic lyrics. The artist also constructed a set in which he will perform–a forest of plywood trees and boulders and a painted sky-at-dusk background. You can find additional information about Kjartansson on his website: http://this.is/rassi/.

You are invited to the opening reception on Octocer 11th, immediately after the performance from 1:00-5:00 pm.

Text of Light at White Box

Thursday, September 20, 2007, 8pm

Text of Light
Alan Licht, DJ Olive, Lee Ranaldo & Marina Rosenfeld
performing with the film I Take These Truths

The Text of Light group was formed in 2001 with the idea to perform improvised music to the films of Stan Brakhage and other members of 1950-60s American Cinema avant-garde (Brakhage’s film Text of Light was the premiere performance and namesake of the group). The original premise was to improvise (not illustrate) to the 1950-60s American Avant-Garde Films, an under-known period of American filmic poetics. Members of the group include Lee Ranaldo and Alan Licht (gtrs/devices), Christian Marclay and DJ Olive (turntables), William Hooker (drums/perc), Ulrich Krieger (sax/electronics), and most recently Tim Barnes (drums/perc). Various combinations of these players attend Text of Light gigs thereby presenting various group permutations while other times all members participate.

“Nadj expresses himself through the body, but he is an intensely theatrical artist with a very distinctive artistic imagination”(Vincent Baudriller, Festival d’Avignon, The New York Times)

An overwhelming success at last summer’s Festival d’Avignon, Paso Doble is a live performance by dancer, Josef Nadj, and Catalan painter, Miquel Barcel??. Using the impact of their bodies, the dancer and painter create a series of ephemeral paintings on a red clay canvas, filled with moments that are sometimes serious, sometimes burlesque. Underscored with a live soundscape by Alain Mah??, the two bodies gradually disappear, as if absorbed into the clay, leaving the canvas free for a different work each evening.

Experiential Modifiers by Kurt Bigenho

Guest Blogger: Sara Dufour, PERFORMA

Part of the Conflux Festival, Experiential Modifiers is a performative installation where participants can check out and use a wide variety of common objects. The objects have all been colored a bright, garish uniform pink, and the installation is staffed by a crew of uniformed workers. In essence, the project functions as a lending library of experiences.

CONFLUX Festival 2007

CONFLUX FESTIVAL 2007
Dates: Thursday, September 13 - Sunday, September 16, 2007
www.confluxfestival.org/conflux2007/

Conflux is the annual NYC festival for contemporary psychogeography where international artists, technologists, urban adventurers and the public put investigations of everyday city life into practice on the streets.

Visual and sound artists, writers, urban adventurers and the public gather for four days to explore their urban environment. With tools ranging from traditional paper maps to high-tech mobile devices, artists present walking tours, public installations, street art and performance, as well as bike and subway expeditions, workshops, a lecture series, a film program and live music performances at night. Over the course of the festival the sidewalks are literally transformed into a mobile laboratory for creative action as people from a wide variety of backgrounds and cultures collectively re-imagine the city as a playground, a space for positive change and an opportunity for civic engagement.
