The Prompt > Tableaux Vivants

The new workshops at the Free University of Bolzano open with a series of tableaux vivants, an art form somewhere between theatre and painting, motion and stillness, history and imagination. Residing between performance and statics, tableaux vivants have become the ideal medium for art that reflects itself and its history. Amidst the rushing of today’s fast media, this art form brings the gesture, the facial expression, the clothing and the costume sharply into focus. They showcase man as doer even when he is standing still. A “conceptual social club” called The Prompt create a series of mini-universes out of minimalist and exaggerated individuals and landscapes. The night culminates with DJs and electronic music.

A common interest in Dadaism and Futuristic variety theatre was the impetus for the founding of the “conceptual social club” called The Prompt at the 2009 Performa Festival in New York. The group will reunite for Transart 10, and will present an explosive cocktail of cabaret moments, readings, performances, screenings of videos and musical presentations. Their ideas find space to resonate at the Hotel Greif.

Troy, NY–From Friday, October 1 through Sunday, October 3, the Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center (EMPAC) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute presents Filament, the first biennial festival of new work in performance, visual arts, sound, and media created by national and international artists at EMPAC.

Featuring over 15 premieres spanning theater, 24-channel sound, contemporary dance, video, and a barn-raising; exchanges with artists, curators, and creative engineers; and a dynamic archive of the artistic process, this three-day festival highlights EMPAC’s focus on production via its commissioning and residency programs. Most of the works in the festival have been produced in whole or in part at EMPAC, taking advantage of the optimal venues and residency spaces, exceptional technology and staff.

Throughout the course of the weekend and in various spaces, Filament presents numerous premiers including:

Ballet Lab: Miracle, Yanira Castro: Wilderness, Early Morning Opera: ABACUS, Volkmar Klein: Relative Realities, Volkmar Klein: Kristallgatsch / Strahlung, MTAA: All Raise This (East), Michal J. Schumacher: Room Pieces Troy 2010, and Hans Tutsche: agitated slowness.

EMPAC also premiers Live Shorts: three programs of performances from across the spectrum of dance, theater, music, and the visual arts, commissioned specifically for Filaament. Working with the same constraints (a performance under 20 minutes utilizing a 20’ x 30’ stage, with the possibility of using only one screen, one projector, and a sound system), artists will present varied and vigorous short works. Participating artists include:

Paul Abacus; Wally Cardona; SUE-C & Laetitia Sonami; Jen Denike; National Theater of the United States of America; Miro Dance Theater; MTAA; Steve Cuiffo, Trey Lyford & Geoff Sobelle; and Trouble–the interstitial space between each performance features the work of Wingspace Theatrical Design.

On Sunday, October 3, EMPAC will host a dedication of the Theater air plenum to the late sound artist, EMPAC artist-in-residence, friend, and colleague, Maryanne Amacher. The dedication will feature a free performance of The Star Room, a multichannel sound piece Amacher was creating while in residence at EMPAC that utilizes space in and around the theater.

Over the three days, in addition to all the art works and performances, the building will be abuzz with conversation and free events: talks with artists, curators, and staff, receptions in Evelyn’s Café, a Saturday night party, and more.

The full schedule of events can be found on the Filament website: http://filament.empac.rpi.edu/.

All access festival passes are $35, and include a goodie bag. Individual tickets are $15 for general admission and $10 for students and seniors.

Parking for the festival will be available in the Rensselaer parking lot on College Avenue, as well as on-street paid parking adjacent to the building (FREE on Saturday and Sunday) Café hours and special menus will be posted on the EMPAC website before the festival.

Directions, lodging, and information about other EMPAC events are available on the EMPAC website: http://www.empac.rpi.edu.

“Japanese choreographer and conjurer of visual magic.” —The Guardian (London) on Saburo Teshigawara

Don’t miss the chance to witness Japanese dancer and choreographer Saburo Teshigawara,
returning after rave reviews from his Lincoln Center Festival 2006 performance of Bones in Pages. He makes a rare visit to New York to lead a visceral exploration of movement.

Miroku, a new solo work, illustrates Teshigawara’s deep focus and exceptional range, rapidly shifting from sharp, jagged gestures to liquid fluidity, providing an intimate look into the mind of its masterful creator. Time and again, he proves that his command of space and sculptural sensibility are peerless.

Star Wars and Modernism: An Artist Commentary
FILM SCREENING AND DISCUSSION
PARTICIPANTS: COLBY CHAMBERLAIN, R. LUKE DUBOIS, JOHN POWERS

May 20, 2010, 7:00 pm, Philoctetes Center
247 East 82nd Street

Star Wars and Modernism, an artist commentary conceived and directed by artist John Powers, explores the original 1977 science fiction film as an object. Juxtaposing video with film stills and historical archives, Powers creates a compelling argument that the visual program of the blockbuster can and should be understood in terms of the art, architecture, and politics of Cold-War America. An essay by Powers published in Triple Canopy, with important editorial contributions by Colby Chamberlain, was the genesis of the project, and composer Luke DuBois is creating the film’s original score.

This 30 min video parallels the story of: Luke, Leah & Han as they battle the evil Emperor & his stooge Darth Vader

with the story of: Robert Smithson, Rosalind Krauss & Robert Morris as they battle the evil Clement Greenberg & his stooge Micheal Fried.

The film also discusses:

Vietnam, Nixon, the rise of feminism, Abby Hoffman & the Yippies, Apocalypse Now, Samurai Films, the civil rights movement and Lucas’s vision of a used future.

Diapason presents:
Kabir Carter «Overexcited Recaptures»
Saturday April 10, 8pm

Overexcited Recaptures takes its cues from the tradition and conventions of resonance pieces and was first presented as part of Performa 07. Sound within a selected space or zone is repeatedly recorded and reproduced until certain frequencies are increasingly amplified and emphasized. This process is activated by a mixture of ambient and directionally focused acoustic occurrences that arise during the realization of the work, and becomes more apparent as the overall sound’s spatial qualities are shaped to the dimensions of the event site. Instead of focusing on changes within a singular acoustic moment, a series of recursively recorded layers are repeatedly stacked in a linear, temporal arc that slowly builds over time, revealing rising gradations of resonant reinforcement in discernible, transformative stages.

The performance will take place in the staircase at the back of the gallery. It will start at 8pm and last about two to three hours. You are welcome to come and go at any time.

This performance is part of the exhibition:

Following the excitement of Performa 09, I would like to urge you to visit an extraordinary exhibition now on view at P.S.1, 100 Years, that brings the history of performance art to life in extraordinary ways. Organized by P.S.1 and Performa, 100 Years is too important to miss; it is an instant introduction to the history of performance art from Futurism to the present and provides a visual and vital timeline of material never before gathered in the same exhibition space.

Conceived as a “living exhibition” of documentation which will continue to grow without limit into the future, 100 Years shows the extraordinary variety of “live” performance that shaped the history of 20th century art. Reprints of Futurist and Dada Manifestos are seen side by side with photographs of Oskar Schlemmer’s Triadic Ballet, films of Francis Picabia’s Relâche, and Mary Wigman’s Hexentanz in the first room, while unforgettable films transferred to video by Yves Klein, Carolee Schneemann, Anna Halprin, Yoko Ono, and Yayoi Kosama can be seen in the second. The exhibition follows a timeline that includes the work of Marina Abramovi?, Vito Acconci, Matthew Barney, Tania Bruguera, Adrien Piper, and Michael Smith through to the most current material by Allora & Calzadilla, Sigalit Landau, and Ryan Trecartin. Also included is a special space devoted to Electronic Arts Intermix, the pioneering resource for video and media art that began collecting and preserving artists’ video in 1971, with a selection from their archives entitled 45 Years of Performance Video from EAI, that features seminal works by Joan Jonas, Stuart Sherman, and Lynda Benglis.

Groundbreaking performances from this extraordinary history are represented by films, videos, photographs, documents, and audio works, providing an educational opportunity for art historians, critics and students — entire dissertations could be written here! — and for all those interested in the history of twentieth and twenty-first century art and the many threads that have shaped and continue to shape its development. Given the anticipated explosion of performance art in galleries and museums that will dominate New York City in the coming year, there is no better introduction to understanding this remarkable material than 100 Years at P.S. 1.

100 Years is on view until April 5, 2010. It is an important and revelatory exhibition which we urge you to visit so that you may immerse yourself in this critical and inspiring history.

Impossible Geometries
When: Sat, February 20, 8:00pm
Where: 177 Livingston Street, Brooklyn, NY 11201

A benefit party for the new home of Triple Canopy, Light Industry, and The Public School • $5-20, pay-as-you-wish • The evening will begin at 8 p.m. with readings by Ed Park and Lynne Tillman. Next, there will be a rare stateside presentation of Lis Rhodes’s Light Music (1975). Rhodes’s double projection is a seminal exploration of 16-mm optical sound—the on-screen abstraction is “read” by the projector as audio—and a classic of British expanded cinema. The “Anti-Matter Cabaret” of Ambergris and a set by the avant-pop ensemble Skeletons will follow, as will DJ sets by Josh Kline and Gary Murphy & Tim Lokiec. • Very special thanks to Katie Dixon and The Downtown Brooklyn Partnership, Sébastien Venuat, and Brooklyn Brewery.
