Writing Encounters
Writing Live 09
Writing Encounters
Writing encounters are collaborative encounters between members of the Writing Live community and Performa09 artists, centred around the proposition of the writer responding to individual Perfoma09 artists’ work.
There are also a series of commissioned encounters between the Writing Live Fellows and UK artist writers during Performa09. These will be short, gestural writing commissions to explore the space of writing across the UK and US.

About York NEW YORK; 101 Postcards from New York
York/NEW YORK; 101 postcards from New York is a commission which invites the Writing Live community to engage in performance writing for the small space – the postcard. Material will be written, gathered and scored on the postcards from within New York City and bound for mail box 501. The postcard has the potential to be witnessed on its travels across the Atlantic, to be read, enjoyed, inspected and handled until it arrives at its destination, a golden mailbox of intimate possibilities. Claire Hind and Claire MacDonald will collect all postcards over a 3 week period as a documented ritual. The collection point in the UK is a micro space of restricted access, of past correspondence and, it inquisitively awaits the activation of Writing Live works.
Claire Hind and Claire MacDonald are the curators of York/NEW YORK, an ongoing series of performance writing commissions interested in the experimental mapping of the two cities in the UK and USA.
Lenora Champagne is a member of PEN American Center and an alumna of New Dramatists, and teaches playwriting and performance at Purchase College/SUNY, where she is Kempner Distinguished Professor.

Correspondence Course
You might call it a rebus, a form of exquisite corpse, an exercise in Q and A or call and response. We call it a correspondence course.
It’s a series of questions starting with – Writing Live? Each question is responded to with another. Each by a different artist. Each question takes whatever form the artist wishes but at its heart has to be a question in response to the last. What kind of call is a question, what does it solicit? When does it begin and end? What lies in between question and answer?
The chain of responses can be seen on the Writing Live Flickr Gallery.
Make a Journey (after Alex Eisenberg)
Make, as in draw, as in write, as in diagram as in ‘do’ a journey you make regularly.
One writer makes a short journey, writes it, and shares it with another. The other writer then repeats the same journey and writes it in their own location. The making of the journeys matches the time of the writing. Each journey will be a textual artwork that shares, imagines and maps the room of writing. This commission presses on how to write actively or presently as a critical match to performance or specific physical gestures.
The journeys are on the Writing Live Flickr Gallery.
