Open 10am-8pm, Nov. 1-22
Located in the latest architectural gem on the Bowery, the brand new Cooper Union building, the Performa Hub will function as our headquarters during the biennial. The Hub offers a meeting point, a lounge for regrouping between events, information on schedules, ticketing and directions, Performa volunteers on-site for assistance, a bookshop, and a venue for special performances, screenings, and panel discussions.
Interior specially designed by nOffice (Markus Miessen, Magnus Nilsson, Ralf Pflugfelder), Berlin, and local architect Nate Lindsay for Performa.
nOffice and its three partners Markus Miessen, Ralf Pflugfelder and Magnus Nilsson are an architectural practice based in Berlin and London, situated on the crossroads of critical architecture, urban intervention and the art world. They have built a pavilion for the Lyon Biennial (2007), an exhibition space for Max Wigram Gallery in London (during Frieze 2006), and traveling exhibition architecture for an international group show initiated by Credit Suisse. The practice is currently working on a series of various-scale projects, including the Hans Ulrich Obrist Archive, Ogilvie and Tyroller Houses (Germany), as well as a year-long redefinition of the spaces of the Bristol-based art institution Arnolfini. In Brazil, nOffice has conceived a masterplan for a 50 hectare rural density strategy and has been commissioned for the design and building of a Mediateque as its central public component. In Berlin, they are working on a gallery and two private residences. The practice also works on an architectural-scale installation with a New-York based visual artist. In collaboration with a consultancy for sustainable economics and development research, nOffice is currently developing a 20-year plan for the future of Berlin.
Markus Miessen (*1978) is an internationally operating architect, researcher, educator, and writer. In 2002, he set up Studio Miessen, a platform for spatial strategy and critical cultural analysis. Miessen is currently a doctoral candidate at the Center for Research Architecture at Goldsmiths, London, investigating conflict-and non-consensus-based forms of participation as a form of alternative spatial practice. He is the editor and author of many books, has published in a wide range of international journals, and is currently a Visiting Professor at the postgraduate laboratory Berlage Institute (Rotterdam), after having taught at the Architectural Association (London) from 2004-08.
Commissioned by Performa and co-presented with Cooper Union. Supported by the Graham Foundation.
