Visionaries
The Performa Visionaries are a group of young patrons dedicated to supporting and enhancing Performa’s mission of producing cutting edge performance art across disciplines. Through a series of public and private events, the Visionaries are intimately involved with every aspect of Performa, from the inception of various works through their development and execution. Most importantly, the Visionaries function as a sort of post-graduate think tank, where ideas are freely exchanged and rigorously examined, and where a spark can become substance on a biennial schedule.
This international fellowship of young patrons was founded in 2007, and the program offers members year-round involvement with the production of performance pieces, events, screenings and previews, as well as exclusive access to artists and curators involved with the biennial. For Performa 07, the Visionaries helped to finance the production of Sanford Biggers’ The Somethin’ Suite. For Performa 09, the Visionaries are helping to realize Wangechi Mutu’s Stone Ihiga. Some highlights of additional Visionaries events have included: a preview of Yvonne Rainer’s RoS Indexical at The Baryshnikov Arts Center; a private dinner with Turkish artist Serkan Ozkaya and his edible art at Freemans; a night of karaoke at Winnie’s with Italian artist Francesco Vezzoli; a world-premiere screening Christian Jankowski’s “Rooftop Routine” (2007) and Nathalie Djurberg’s “Untitled (Working Title Kids & Dogs)” (2007) at Soho House, New York; and various salons at the home of Performa’s Founder and Director, RoseLee Goldberg.
Membership is by invitation only. This policy ensures that the group will remain closely connected, allowing Performa to offer the Visionaries an intimate involvement with all aspects of its work.
