MEMO to John, Barack and Hillary from DTW

GUEST BLOGGER: Lana Fee, PERFORMA

Dance Theater Workshop’s David Sheingold writes a fantastic blog post to our future president regarding the future of the arts in this country. We can all agree that the next lucky one in the hot seat will have to get creative in more ways than one, but we simply must invest more into our cultural persona as Americans and factor this into our thirst for change! Appointed leadership, funding, art education that translates to reasonable income: all very good points David. Pretty embarrassing that we even have to argue the importance of supporting our greatest innovators (not just those who can afford it)! America’s bloated budget is being disputed no doubt, but we must continue discussing this problem to exhaustion! Imperialists with no taste- we cannot go down this way!!

Pierre Rigal/Aur??lien Bory ??rection NY Premiere!

Pierre Rigal/Aur??lien Bory ??rection NY Premiere!?

Wednesday-Friday, October 24-26, 7:30 pm

Saturday, October 27, 7:30 & 9:30pm

In this poignant tribute to Homo erectus, the explosive French dancer and former athlete Pierre Rigal writhes, jolts, and bends his way from belly to feet, turning each stage in the evolutionary process into a daring poem of perseverance. Production designer Aur??lien Bory’s morphing projections of austere, elemental light define the limited space within which Rigal? can act, as he fights for the dignity of standing.

Ragnar Kjartansson’s FOLKSONG!

Ragnar Kjartansson will be performing ‘FOLKSONG,’ a 10-day long ‘continuous’ (11:00 am to 5:00pm daily 10/11-10/20) musical composition at 508 West 25th Street. Imagine sort of an ethereal-rock guitar piece, with accompanying partly incoherent yet very melodic lyrics. The artist also constructed a set in which he will perform–a forest of plywood trees and boulders and a painted sky-at-dusk background. You can find additional information about Kjartansson on his website: http://this.is/rassi/.

You are invited to the opening reception on Octocer 11th, immediately after the performance from 1:00-5:00 pm.

scratches, riffs, music.

GUEST BLOGGER: Filip Gilissen, PERFORMA

Scratch a record and you’re talking hip-hop. Or you’re talking Christian Marclay. Marclay, a visual artist and composer, has been repurposing vinyl and turntables since disco days.

He was in the news recently because his 1995 film Telephones, uh, let’s say inspired Apple’s ad for the new iPhone — in both cases, it’s a montage of actors answering the phone. Telephones is not in the public domain, but you can see a bit of it in this mini-docu on Marclay.

Listen to excerpst of his compositions on Itunes.
