OURS: Democracy in the Age of Branding Opens Wednesday

OURS: Democracy in the Age of Branding
October 16, 2008 - February 1, 2009
The Sheila C. Johnson Design Center
Anna-Maria and Stephen Kellen Gallery
Parsons The New School for Design
66 Fifth Avenue at 13th Street, New York City

Opening reception: Wednesday, October 15, 6 - 9 p.m.
Website: http://www.branding-democracy.org

On the eve of the U.S. presidential elections, Parsons The New School for Design, in collaboration with the Vera List Center for Art and Politics at The New School, presents an interdisciplinary exhibition investigating democracy as a global brand. Contributions by 40 participants feature online works, installations, sculptures, photography, video and film as well as panels, lectures, performances, and charrettes.

“OURS: Democracy in the Age of Branding” examines the desires generated and promoted by democracy as a brand–such as choice, participation, freedom of expression, a sense of belonging, and the promise of individual success, all embodied in the notion of “liberty”–and looks at how and where these desires find fulfillment or are displaced. The exhibition also investigates both aesthetic and political systems of representation developed in response to these desires, as well as those power structures that run parallel to a democratic government.

Participants:
Yael Bartana / Erick Beltran / Alexis Bhagat / Paul Chan / Joseph DeLappe / Alexandra Domanovic / Sam Durant / Kota Ezawa / Andrea Geyer / Liam Gillick / Sharon Hayes / Susan Hiller / Ashley Hunt / I Approve This Message / Institute for Infinitely Small Things / Emma Kay / Komar & Melamid / Asaf Koriat / Runo Lagomarsino / Steve Lambert / Les Liens Invisibles / Ligorano/Reese / Miguel Luciano / Michael Mandiberg / Emery Martin / Aleksandra Mir / Carlos Motta / Dave Muller / Timo Nasseri / Ariel Orozco / Trevor Paglen / PETLab / Nadine Robinson / Anri Sala / Hank Willis Thomas / Johan Tiren / Brian Tolle / Judi Werthein / Wooloo Productions / The Yes Men / Carey Young

A Launch for Allan Kaprow’s How To Make a Happening

How to Make a Happening For 100 Radios

A Launch for Allan Kaprow’s How To Make a Happening
Presented by Primary Information

Maccarone
Saturday, October 11, 2008, 6:00 – 8:00 PM

Primary Information is pleased to announce the CD release of Allan Kaprow’s How To Make a Happening LP with a one-night only event: How to Make a Happening for 100 Radios. As the title implies, the event will be comprised of Kaprow’s lost classic from 1966 How To Make a Happening broadcast continuously over a small orchestra of 100 FM Radios. The event will take place at Maccarone at 630 Greenwich Street from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.

Lost for 40 years, Primary Information has remastered and released How To Make a Happening as a CD, making it accessible on a wide scale for the first time in the title’s history. Simple in construction, yet profound in context, How To Make a Happening is Allan Kaprow delivering 11 rules on how, and how not, to make a Happening, an movement begun by Kaprow in the late fifties that is known for its unpredictability, open scores, and constantly-evolving form.

How to Make a Happening for 100 Radios is an auto-improvised event that you can’t get from the CD alone, yet is based on the both the piece itself as a discursive act and its format as a sound multiple. The installation will consist of 100 radios (of all varieties and ages) tuned to the same frequency, in which the CD will be broadcast, endlessly, from FM transmitters. The performance hinges on the imprecision of radio technology, providing a platform for the broadcasts/frequencies to interact with each other and audience members in an uncontrolled manner as the piece plays out, creating an aurally-roving sound collage.

How To Make a Happening was re-issued with the cooperation of the Estate of Allan Kaprow and the Getty Research Institute. How to Make a Happening for 100 Radios is made possible through the support of Maccarone and Hauser & Wirth.

For more information on the event, please contact info(at)primaryinformation.org.

Art in Odd Places: Specifically 14th Street during October

Here is one for all of you who love surprises on the streets of New York as I do!

Art in Odd Places: Pedestrian
“During the month of October 2008, the fourth annual AiOP will present Pedestrian on 14th Street, Manhattan - the great divider between uptown/downtown and highbrow/lowbrow. From the East River to the Hudson River, artists of all mediums will encourage the masses of daily pedestrians to rediscover this corridor of diverse commerce, including Union Square, historical site of social and political activism. Projects will explore connections between public spaces, pedestrian traffic, and ephemeral transient disruptions. Like a scavenger hunt, New Yorkers will use a map to discover art in unexpected places along this amazing street.”

Dumbo Arts Festival

dumbo arts festival

This weekend Dumbo Arts Center opens its galleries for people to look behind the curtains: Installation, Sculptures, Projections, Interactive Art, Performances as well as mysterious “Water Art” and “Elevator Art” are presented in and around the Dumbo Area on 3 days and will keep all of your senses busy. Even the huge video art screenings of Video_Dumbo will not only supply those of you who just want to sit, but also those who want to experience some live-video and interaction broadcasts (which is compared to the size of New York quite rare I think). So no excuses. I will definetly spend my precious weekend there, being able to do it without sneaking in because it is free (!)

General times: Fr 7-9pm, Sa & So 12-9pm
30 Washington Street, Brooklyn, New York, 11201
