Jesper JustTrue Love Is Yet To Come,
PERFORMA commissioned Danish artist Jesper Just to create his first live multimedia performance for PERFORMA05. True Love Is Yet To Come portrayed the conflict between rationality and passion in a reserved man yearning to liberate his innermost feelings. Just explored the subject of love, and its many changeable qualities ‘ unrequited, mysterious, sentimental, and romantic ‘ through an intriguing all-male cast whose emotional nakedness was underscored by a noir sensibility.
Just worked with Danish production company Vision3 to realize this large-scale production. Life-like and life-sized three-dimensional film of singers, as well as members of the Finnish Men’s Screaming Choir (Huutajat)’were projected alongside a live singer, Baard Owe.
A PERFORMA Commission. Produced in association with Vision3, and made possible with generous support from the Danish Arts Council, Stephan Weiss Studio and Perry Rubenstein Gallery.

Francis Alÿs, Rehearsal II

Poster announcement for Francis Alÿs’s Rehearsal II, 2005
Francis Alÿs, Rehearsal II, PERFORMA05.
PERFORMA commissioned a live performance by the Belgian born, Mexico City-based artist Francis Alÿs in collaboration with Rafael Ortega.
Rehearsal II featured a stripper, pianist, and soprano.
The fluctuation between engagement and repose onstage curbs the expectation of a seamless performance, and, for Alÿs, Rehearsal II allegorically explored notions of promise and disappointment, as well as the avoidance of success.
A PERFORMA Commission. Made possible with additional support from Lucille, Ron Neeley and Stephanie French.
