Architect Konstantin Melnikov (Russian, 1890 - 1974) was the fourth child and a vegetarian. He first became interested in art and architecture as a teenager through the family's milk delivery woman, introducing him to a wealthy engineer who would later pay for his art studies. His most famous building was his own home, the Melnikov House, which he began building in 1927. Due to material rationing by the state, he was limited to brick and wood, which led him to such an unorthodox design. Dennis McNulty will create a spatial, gestural, sonic, and linguistic performance around this piece of architecture for Performa 11.
